Abstract

To determine terpenoid profile of Solanum villosum using high performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) technique. 2cl of test solution and 2cl of standard solution was loaded as 6mm band length in the 3 x 10 Silica gel 60F254 TLC plate using Hamilton syringe and CAMAG LINOMAT 5 instrument. The extract was run along with the standard terpenoid compound and it was observed that the extract showed the presence of terpenoid and it was confirmed from the chromatogram after derivatization. The Rf value of the different compounds present in the extract was found to 0.04,0.21,0.27,0.55,0.59,0.65,0.75,0.80,0.90 and 0.94 of peak 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 respectively. Among them, peaks 2, 6, 7 and 10 were found to be terpenoid compounds. It can be concluded that HPTLC analysis of ethanolic leaf extract of Solanum villosum (Mill) can be used as a diagnostic tool for the correct identification of the plant and it is useful as a phytochemical marker and also a good estimator of genetic variability in plant populations
